Paper that has been weakened or damaged through accumulated wear and tear can be treated and repaired. Pages can be cleaned using various gentle techniques in order to remove ingrained dirt and stains. Paper can also be de-acidified.
Brittle paper can be strengthened with the application of sizes or consolidants, in order to maximise its life span. Tears and areas of loss can be repaired using fine Japanese papers, tinted so they unobtrusively sit among the original material. To make our repairs we have a wide collection of Japanese and handmade Western papers.
All of the papers and adhesives used in paper conservation are archivally sound products, so that our repairs are reversible; in line with current conservation best practice and guidelines.
